MNP Campaigns by Operators

Since the official launch of MNP, there has been some interesting acquisition campaigns lodged by the Mobile Operators.

Here are some snapshots of the MNP campaigns done on TV that I am able to find on the web, to be shared.

Lets start with Celcom :

In educating the public, Celcom had made some funny TV commercials with Harith Iskandar as the Ambassador.. there are a few of them, but I am only posting just two.. more can be obtained from Youtube

Celcom positions the campaign on MNP similar to their coverage campaigns, by establishing their "claim" over the subject matter. Its an interesting positioning approach.

DiGi

On the other note, had made it more fun in its TVCs.

There's even a jingle for it :

However, apart from Celcom and DiGi, the other two operators are seen silent on the TVCs for MNP. They might have other approaches to their subscriber acquisition through MNP.

Samsung M880 - Key Entry and Google Map

Today's entry will be on usage experience for the M8800.

There are many available applications, but I will write on two features that are a bit different from most phones in the market, at the moment.

The first is on the text input experience in using M8800. Since this is a full touch screen device, its important to estimate the ease of use if you are purchasing the device.

It has several options for text input :

a) Alpha-numeric virtual keypads
b) QWERTY virtual keypads
c) Sectioned handwriting recognition (slower experience due to the recognition task)
d) Full screen handwriting recognition (slower experience due to the recognition task)

My personal experience, the first two options are very friendly and accurate and it provides easy usage for my messaging and browsing needs.

I have a video on the text entry experience as follow :

Text Entry

M8800 has an internal GPS function. With that function, the Google Map application is pre-installed. How does Google Map fare in comparison with Nokia Maps and Garmin XT?

Here is a snapshot of how the application works.

Google Map application

Note : The Google Map streams data off the internet. So, its best to be on the unlimited data rate plan or you will be served with an interesting bill amount in your monthly statement.

Google Map Navigation

Here are snapshots of my usage experience

I was at Ampang Point, and hence, started the route from there, to Ampang Jaya towards Jalan Dedap. At the touch of the End point, an address was requested.. I keyed in Jalan Dedap and the google search provided some suggestion. After selection the appropriate location, I hit the show directions button and ...

Details of the route was presented.

Navigational instruction pops up.

This is a snapshot of me meddling the roadmap of Kuala Lumpur.

Just as a show of the data usage, look at the blue rectangular ticker that appear on the top right corner. The map is streamed straight from the web (constantly).

A video capture of the Google map on mobile :

As show above, the application is VERY data intensive. It loads the map as you progress.

Interesting feature :

a) Map or satellite view option
b) Address or location search is online

Some things for further improvement :

a) The Map navigation will provide a specific route, if you move off the route, Google Map does not re-route you accordingly (unlike Garmin or Nokia Maps)
b) There is no voice navigation feature
c) Despite easy location to destination input, it still requires many input steps

Other notes :

a) With the internal GPS, this phone allows for Geo-tagging function
b) Location info tagged to the photo snaps

Apart from the above review, all other functions and applications are pretty much similar to most mid-range to high end phones.

Pre-launch Preview - Samsung M8800

Samsung has been very ambitious recently with their high megapixel, PDA-like phones.

Following the hyped up Omnia, they are introducing a new phone, positioned to thwart off the new range of smarter and more powerful mobile phones from the more established names such as HTC, iPhone and the likes, this phone is named M8800 or codenamed : Bresson or Pixon.

M8800 is the second 8 megapixel camera that is spawned out by Samsung after the newly launched symbian based iNNOV8.

However, unlike Omnia and iNNOV8 that uses Windows Mobile and Symbian Operating system, M8800 is using running Samsung's proprietary operating system which has its appeal and drawbacks at the same time.

Let me share the physical exterior outlook in the first segment.

Here are some snapshots of the phone :

The basic keyless candy bar design packs a powerful camera and some decent applications.

The phone is slim and rather lightweight.

There is a similarity of an actual camera feel to the back design of the phone.

Have a look at it again...

Seems like Samsung had placed some thoughts on the adding of a more user friendly feel to the phone by having the non-slip rubber pad on the back to have the camera function usage more practical.

From the physical factor, we move on to the operating system.

To have the navigation feel of the phone, I have the following video taken :

This video is approximately 3 minutes, a guided tour for the menu navigation, the screen widget, dialing a number, typing an sms and photo viewing with the accelerometer feature.

Sample image from this 8 megapixel device

In comparison to my Nokia E90's 3.2 megapixel image

Having the phone with me for a couple of days, this is what I feel about it.

a) The feel of the phone is good
b) This proprietary OS device meets basic to average "smart" device expectations (refer to technical specs below)
c) Camera has the megapixels but its still not perfect. Blurring while focusing, delay in photo snapping
d) I got bored with the navigation after 2 hours. It takes more steps to perform each function i.e sms typing, dialing, camera activation
e) It has interesting widget feature on the home screen. You can select some key functions or applications that can be accessed through sliding panel on the left side of the screen
f) The sound from the speakers are excellent
g) Personally, its a good second phone for me. Some features like HSDPA, a-GPS, camera with high megapixel, divx video player... in a way, this phone feels more like a multimedia player with internet connection and the phone is an added feature (as opposed to a phone with the multimedia features). This will not be my main phone as the use of the touch-screen feature is difficult whilst driving, word entry into the phone is taxing (i do a lot of mails and document editing on the move) and I cannot add more application to personalize the phone like most Windows Mobile or Symbian operated phones.
h) Cost factor for this? Well.. we'll probably find out once its out in the market maybe next year

I am finishing off this entry with a brief technical specs for M8800 :

* Quad-band GSM, tri-band HSDPA
* 107.9x54.6x14.9mm, 110 g
* 3.2-inch touch screen display (240 x 400 pixels)
* 8 megapixel camera, auto focus, face recognition with smile detection and
blink detection, WDR (wide dynamic range), ASR (advanced shake reduction),
GPS geotagging, ISO 1600, WVGA (720x480 pixels) and VGA (640 x 480 pixels)
@30fps video recording
* Built-in GPS receiver (Using google maps)
* Accelerometer
* DivX playback
* FM radio with RDS
* microSD card slot
* Bluetooth
* Landscape virtual QWERTY keyboard
* Handwriting recognition
* ShoZu integration - direct image and video upload
* Office document viewer

Experience the Xperia (X1)

SonyEricsson launched a new and eagerly awaited phone, the Xperia or X1. This phone, that runs on Windows Mobile version 6.1, offers many interesting new features for a more enhanced user experience for demanding services by mobile users.

Xperia is the first Sonyericsson's device that is operating on Windows Mobile and it was conceived as a retaliation strategy to challenge the growing acceptance of smartphone devices from HTC and Apple. This particular device is also said to be the famed iphone contender.

Based on the above highlights and the expectations that grew in anticipation of its release, how does it fare?

I did not have the chance to have it with in my hands for long, so I am gonna share my brief experience with it (If I could get hold of it for a longer timespan, I will have an updated entry on it in soon). But based on the short feel of handling the phone, and positioning myself as a buyer evaluating the merchandise at the retail outlet... let me share with you that experience and also will summarize my opinion on xperia.

Here are some snapshots of the phone.

This is the plain folded frontal view with the keyboard hidden.

The device look with the keyboard slid outwards.

Note : The keyboard is too small and very "flat". Maneuvering the QWERTY contraption for a brief session, my hands and fingers started to stress and I am starting to feel like acquiring the blackberry thumb syndrome

It would be better if they are slightly raised and with an curved edge design of the keys.

The back view of the phone is pretty plain and has a highly metallic exterior. Very simple and plain.

Here are some videos that I manage to capture while using the phone.

The phone booting up and getting ready for service

Video of me fiddling with the phone and the accelerometer function that comes with it.

Other key features :

a) HSDPA
b) 3.2 Megapixel camera
c) Built-in GPS service

My opinion :

a) Cost factor : retailing at the range of RM 3 to 3.5 K (way too steep, iphone can be easily priced at RM 2.8 from Hong Kong (fully unlocked version)
b) Usage experience : many interesting interactive experiences with the accelerometer, impressive multimedia animated graphics of menus swishing, swirling and etc.,
c) keyboard : bad experience, too small a keyboard,

Again.. have a look at the keyboard and my fingers...

d)screen size : is small for enhanced positive experience (in comparison to the Iphone screen size as well many other smartphones out there i.e Omnia SGH-i900,Nokia 5800, HTC HD-T8282)
e) Software navigation : its windows.. :-P
f) Will I buy it? :

For that price, no.
For the features, Not compelling enough

A glimpse of the technical specifications.

MNP is officially launched - Nationwide

Yesterday, the Minister from KTAK (Kementerian Tenaga, Air dan Komunikasi), Dato' Shaziman Abu Mansor, officiated the nationwide launch of the Mobile Number Portabilty (MNP) service. The session was held in Putra World Trade Center and supported by all operators in Malaysia. Following the launch, Malaysian mobile subscribers can now move from one operator to the next without losing their current mobile number.

From this launch, it is expected that all mobile service operators to provide more competitive services and attractive packages into the market and customers will have the independence of choosing the service provider that provides the needed services and best pricing packages.

Today, all DiGi and Celcom had started their campaign for the potential subscribers to "port" into their networks.

Wireless KL offers Free Access

A collaboration amongst Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia (SKMM) and Packet ONE Networks Sdn Bhd (P1) took place some months back to push for a comprehensive pioneer wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) under the Klang Valley broadband push(KVB90).

Under this initiative, the coverage is available in some locations and is continuously expanding. Details for the coverage availability can be obtained here. Where it is available, the bandwidth of 512 kbps is offered for free to users. This free offer is only for the period of two years (as stated in the website). The wireless access is based on the 2.4 GHz wireless LAN technology or better known as the Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi).

Putting in the word "free" in the service, I am wondering how long it would take before the shared bandwidth will be congested.

For details, check out WirelessKL.

Personally, I am wondering how this wireless project can be successfully implemented without running into some series of radio noises or channel conflicts arising from the nature of wi-fi - open band and publicly made available. Wi-fi is an open band wireless technology that was assigned to the ISM band for industrial, scientific and Medical use. It's usage does not require any licensing from the regulator, hence the sprouting of Wi-fi devices and its proliferated usage over the years since it began in 2000 - it has limited radio channels (11 to be precise) and based on the rampant usage.. I believe all the channels are fully utilized and noise and configuration conflicts may arise.

The new generation telecommunication

As I pondered earlier on the possible outcome of the future telecommunication industry, many of them had taken form. The landscape is aggressively changing with cross industry roles fusing and some evolving to its natural path of progress.

Just a little over two years, the internet usage pattern has tremendously evolved. Three years back, the internet was a source for information search with the dominance of Yahoo!, Google and MSN as the preferred search engine. Commerce has also broken down physical boundaries and led to the fame of ebay and amazon. But at the turn of 2007, massive development had taken place and people had turned to generating their own contents and expanding their social networking circle through new channels provided by Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and Blogger. The way people communicate, share experiences, vocalize their thoughts over the internet space has grown exponentially... creating the community termed as the "digital natives".

With the rapid development of multi-access devices, high bandwidth wireless access and cross-platform content delivery applications; many internet players, mobile service operators, content aggregators and other digital media player had come to a cross-road on strategizing their onward business direction. As a direct result, we have seen search engine provider; Google, realizing their strategies to be a wireless mobile service provider through their "Android" project and operators such as TM Net had announce their business plan to move away from being the broadband access service provider to a content aggregator powerhouse. In neighboring countries, SK Telecomms from Korea created Melon to take on the mobile music aggregator role and China Telecomm partners with several music labels to introduce I-Music. The most interesting is on how Apple, created iPhone for its move from the vendor space to the content service distribution channel.

Lets have a recap on what moves or drives these changes.

a) Increasing capacity and capabilities : cross-functional mobile devices, multiple wireless technology (Wimax, Wi-fi, 3G, HSDPA), powerful mobile processor for handheld devices and miniaturization of electronic components
b) Changing consumption pattern : active internet presence, immediate access to information, anytime-anywhere content request for music and video files
c) Digital culture : Rise of digital community and the exponentially spawning "digital natives" that populates social networking channels, uploading and sharing of user generated contents
d) Complex and sophisticated software development : cross device delivery solution, development of new and efficient applications and softwares
e) Monetization/new business models : cross platform media distribution channel, mobile advertising, strategic alliances and new generation partnerships

At this competitive juncture, internet powerhouses, mobile and fixed line service operators, content owners and distributors are faced with new challenges and decisions. Things are just starting to heat up...

DiGi - preparing for the 3G deployment

After resolving several issues such as being denied the 3G license and the almost controversial of DiGi-TIME 3G license buy-out, company is now setting its course for its third generation network deployment.

In the attached paper clipping, it seems that DiGi had its vendor confirmed and all set for the service delivery by early next year.

Over the years, DiGi had always been one of the more creative and innovative operators within the Malaysian telecommunication industry. Let's hope with the 3G capability, the company can push the boundaries further than what other operators could with their 3G networks and the lead time they had before DiGi comes to the playground.

Other industry observation - MNP pressure :

Prior to the 3G progress announcement by DiGi, the Malaysian mobile service operators are seen to be engaging in some heavy market offensive and defensive moves - mainly stirred by the MNP pressure. Maxis is aggressively engaging in its corporate account acquisition through its Blackberry package, case studies on York and DHL, extending loyalty through the prepaid active line extension and pushing content services... Celcom seems to be building up the defensive approach by highly advertising and promoting its family supplementary packages, it is also placing its defense towards the corporate accounts that it has and increasing reward values for the X-Pax prepaid users. DiGi, pushes more innovation with its life insurance package, new rate plans (Individuals and Corporate) mainly focusing on savings. And as for the new entry into the market, U Mobile is still seen to be only focusing on its rate plans, boasts of its per minute billing and the phone bundling.

MNP : Phased launch

The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service has finally been announced to be available for public on the 29th of August 2008. This service will me made available in several phases until their full fledged nationwide launch on 7th October.

In the tentative chronological order, the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM)had planned the following sequences in the introduction of this mandatory service ;

a) Limited Live Launch : Only in Klang Valley at limited outlets from each operator. There are two phases within this Limited Live Launch session :
- From 29th August to 14th September, the service is only offered to Prepaid users
- From 15th September to 6th October, the service will be offered to both Prepaid and postpaid users.. but not ready for Corporate Users

b) Full launch : This session is tentatively scheduled for 7th October. This full launch signals the service availability nationwide and to all customer profiles (Prepaid, postpaid and corporate).

Within the Limited Live Launch session, all operators had come into an unofficial agreement to withhold all marketing activities and communications until the full launch. SKMM will take up all the communications for MNP until that launch date comes into effect.

Few interesting things to observe in the Malaysian telecommunication market. The first is on be the movement of subscribers porting in and out between existing operators (Maxis, DiGi and Celcom) and how will the newly launched contender, U Mobile; fair in this MNP environment. Will the mobile landscape be changed? How competitive will the Mobile Services be in the near future? Will MNP really excite competition? Or will it just be one of those services that will be forgotten and shelved aside?

Most importantly... within the next six months... who will be the net gainer for MNP?

PacketOne - Wimax operator Launched

Its been a while since there were any real news from the recipient of the WIMAX licenses from the Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia (SKMM) since March 2007.

Then a scream shattered the silence as Packet One or P1, the sales and marketing arm of Green Packet announced the launch of their internet services.

There are two services made available to public at limited coverage locations in Klang Valley. The two wireless technologies offered are based the licensed WIMAX spectrum solution and the other, using Wi-Fi technology based on unlicensed ISM band.

Service availability are mainly within the Subang and Sunway vicinity in Selangor and Gombak and Sentul area in Kuala Lumpur.

What are being offered apart from the basic internet access services?

a) Priority broadband subscription (this should be access service with a defined SLA - to ensure that the required quality delivery is rendered as opposed to the abominable "best effort" access services by other internet service providers in Malaysia)
b) VoIP services (calling cards)
c) Basic IP surveillance service (Similar to the existing services offered by the mobile players that I had earlier written on here.)

Its too early to comment on anything else, apart from the fact that :

a) this is the first company in Malaysia to launch the WIMAX service (this is funny since the WIMAX standard is not fully finalized - to my knowledge, only Korea had a similar technology launched called WiBro.. but that was based on the the national IT blueprint which allows the country to isolate themselves from external standards and focus on the national agenda despite the technology being proprietary)
b) the coverage reach is still very small, I would have expected a more bigger footprint given that they have been offering wi-fi services prior to the Wimax launch
c) Cost of subscription is TOO expensive.. there are still upfront charges (at the moment the modem; being priced at RM 999, is given away FOC under the promotional banner - but.. a RM 100 for registration fee? wow!!then there's activation fee and stamp duty fee.. )

And after the stipulated promotional rates... the normal rate plans are as follow :

Anyways, we'll see how they will perform in the near future. P1 has a target of 40,000 subscribers by end of this year and 100,000 within 12 months.

There are also other big projects that seem to be lined up for P1 in the near future, an interesting one would be on the Metropolitan wide wireless access project that they had recently been awarded.

I am not one of those who is fascinated by specific technology.. because the technology is just an enabler.. its the business sense that matters. In my recent experience with people from P1.. the technology seems to be the pride.

Based on pressure from the government, there are news on other Wimax operators entering the market soon, with YTL announcing the possible date for launch next month.

Mobile Number Portability Announced in Malaysia

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has finally been officially introduced in Malaysia, after years of discussion and planning.

Since the regulator, Suruhanjaya Kommunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) ,issued the public enquiry paper in 2004, MNP was targeted to launch 2006. in Q4 2008, after the consortium that manages the MNP clearing house was identified and appointed; an industry task force was created and consists of SKMM and representatives from each telco to explore the best implementation approach and deployment.

MNP is a regulatory tool that is applied to the telecommunication industry to ensure higher competition between operators and to ensure that the consumers are gaining more benefits and better experience.

Earlier, there were several announcements to the launch of MNP by the previous Energy and Telecommunications minister. After three different announcements (March, April and June 2008), the new Minister that took office has the honor to announce the launch.

I will be covering more on MNP in my next coming posts on the background and benefits.. maybe with comparison with some other countries that had adopted MNP.

New Mobile Broadband Provider - U Mobile

It was by chance that I came across the access and modem promotion in Low Yat recently, I have been interested in getting a HSDPA USB modem but had been contemplating for a while due to the rather high retail prices that they come with.

To date, most wireless broadband providers will require upfront payment for the contract period on their modem issued i.e IZZI would need the lump sum total of the annual subscription charges (usually amounting to more than RM 1K -makes you wonder.. this is already like an engagement with an option to marry - am I that committed?).

U Mobile however, on the positive note, does not require upfront payment for the modem and service subscribe. Their "Surf With U" package only requires a RM 50 activation fee and you can take the modem home to test if this start-up operator has service coverage at your area. Upon signing up, a trial period of 8 days is allocated upon service activation so that you can test for coverage, quality of service and return them within the 8 days without any questions asked.

What does "Surf With U" package offer?

a) Up to 3.6 MBPS High speed internet access (but service is on best effort only - how come we hear of this so commonly stated by all service providers, no one can offer guaranteed bandwidth solution?)
b) Monthly fee of RM 78 ( to date, I believe this is the cheapest rate in town, I am on this package because of this rate :-P)
c) Free modem (its been absorbed in the 24 Months contract or pay fine of RM 799 for premature cancellation)

Now, my first two days having the service... how is the experience like?

Bandwidth seems to be acceptable, I mean.. I had expected more, but comparing to the pledge of 1MB that Streamyx promised me... U Mobile seems to deliver better "best-effort" service.

Here are some screen captures of the bandwidth usage that I recorded.

The orange window is the modem's dialer application. And accompanying it, is the bandwidth monitoring application at the bottom of the dialer.

Looking at the bandwidth above, I have two movies that I need to watch and thought that, I'd give U Mobile the task of handling it while I turn in for the night. Here is the screen capture of the downloading performance :

Prior to turning in, I did get to see a rather constant average of 500KB/S which is better that what my streamyx had faired.

However, U Mobile still has limited coverage, the website does not offer much information, its best to call in when you need confirmation of the places you intend to use the service. To me, it serves my apartment, I am rather happy with that.

The only thing that may not be to my liking :

a) The contract is 24 Months - for premature termination, need to pay RM 799 for the modem
b) There is a data restriction of 5 GB a month.. ( I do far more than that a month )

Home Surveillance - subscribing to a service

I was browsing around some of the local telcos website and found that 2 out of the existing 3 operators provide a solution that they call "home surveillance".

Both operators offer a package comprising of a IP video camera and a monthly subscription to consumers for the abovementioned package.

In this day and age, with a wealth of gadgetry available on the local shore... do we actually need to subscribe to a service for this?

Take for instance that I have an existing broadband subscription at home, all I need are just strategically placed IP Cameras around my home that I can call up on any screen device by typing a special IP address to have a view of what goes on at home. Consumers are spoilt for choice on which camera to choose, take these WiFi enabled IP Cameras for example.

BUT... if there is a REAL need to use Mobile Telecommunication Solution for your home surveillance, I came across a very interesting IP camera by ZTE. It has several connectivity options to your PC, you can opt for USB cable or just use it on Bluetooth. A fully charged camera can be located in any strategic location without a need for power cables.

The model number for the device is MF58, the camera is actually a permutation of a 3G mobile phone. It runs on a 3G SIM card and when placed anywhere within the house (with available 3G coverage), all a you need to do is place a video call to the number for the SIM card placed in the camera. You will then be able to intercept video transmission as if you are making a normal 3G Video call.

The best part of this device is, since its a phone... you can actually hear what goes on on the camera side and if you need to scare people away, it is built in with a speaker for your voice to be patched through... excellent!!!

In addition to that, there is an additional benefit of tiltating camera that you can manouevre to have a sweeping view of the entire room, this is done by pressing some numbers on the number pad of your phone.

The side view of the camera will reveal the camera and its tilting mechanism

The SIM compartment is placed at the back of the camera along with the USB connector.

With the ZTE device (I am sure there are others of similar products in the market), home surveillance is truly simple... if just as easy as calling another phone number, no need to loose hair configuring secure ports and IP addresses, just fit in an additional SIM card, and you are ready to go...

It also has several security features such as PIN confirmation to view the video call and MMS snapshots if you are away from 3G coverage, you can also store images captured by the camera into the flash memory card slot available on the device... with all these features, one off payment... why is there a need to subscribe to an operator and pay monthly fees for it? I just requested for a supplementary line without any monthly commitment package and costs me RM 10 a month.. tht's all...

The Witcher - RPG

Its been a while since I was awed by exhilarating RPGs (Role Playing Game) since the days of Final Fantasy...

As I have blogged earlier, I have upgraded part of my PC settings and equipped it with a good graphic card. Since then, I have spent some time testing high end graphic games.

Todate, the best that I have come across is The Witcher.

It takes on the fantasy landscape of a character who slays monsters and ghouls in the olden days. The story revolves around a character by the name of Geralt or better known as "the white wolf" and is based on the books and stories of The Witcher, by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. In the plot, witchers are sterile mutants with supernatural abilities and often offers their services for gold... a supernatural bounty hunter.

Graphically, the game presents an impressive and detailed background setting for each scene. Despite having a good graphic card, I tend to experience overheating from time to time... a bit of a turn off but I forgave shortfall as I am utterly impressed by the overall game itself. There are some strategizing to be done and similar to the character development in Final Fantasy, the experience points needed to be gathered and prioritization on which of the many skill development needed to be considered to ensure that your character is delivering best performance.

There are a lot of customization that you can have on your character.

The storyline in the game is rather well done, and at every decision you make, the storyline changes... so make the right choices...

Within your quests, there are places to visit and there are new worlds to explore. The game offers elaborate an elaborate world with astounding landscapes.

In addition, there are many side-quests that you could take on. For instance, this game is rated +18 for the fact that there are some strong sexual contents available. In some of the side-quests, you could actually have sex with some of the characters in the game... if you know what to say, what to give, and when to do what... :-)

Despite all the above, I was an early taker to the game title and suffered several bugs within the game. However, these are easily corrected in the patch given on their official website (and you need a good broadband connection to go along with that, one of the patch is 120++ mb)

Anyways, I really enjoyed this game and sacrificed a lot of my sleeping hours dedicated to the quests... its really enjoyable...its dark, its gothic and definitely suits my taste buds...hope it does yours...

Here is some snapshots of what the game entails

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

I have had experienced an instance when my preloaded Windows XP did not respond to the activation key and made life difficult when Microsoft introduced the WGA (Windows Genuine Authentication).

Without the authentication of the "legal" operating system, usually happens after a full reformatting is done, I get annoying reminder balloon on my desktop (which I managed to rectify, but I cannot share this here) and I am not entitled to the latest patches and updates from Microsoft.

There is a way to have the updates process by-passed (only if you are a legit Windows user and experiencing the same issue that I have - but then again, who am I to judge :-P) from an alternative site. To obtain all the patches an update, visit windiz. I advise using Mozilla's firefox for this.

There will be a small application that you need to download, after having it installed, click on the site again and you will have a scan option. Click the scan button and choose your updates... :-)

In addition to the windows update, you can also get update on drivers and get a look into your system set-up... just explore the options on the page.

Have fun...

Traveller D301 - HSDPA USB Modem

After testing several modems for HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access), I finally found an excellent USB version.

This modem was passed to me for testing by a fellow friend working with one of the local mobile operator.

I was sceptical at first, I am almost confident that I may experience another let down similar from the other devices that I tested. However, I was proven wrong on the first session itself. The traveller D301 is similar to the Huawei's E220 USB modem in its concept, it uses a matchbox sized modem with a flash memory containing installation softwae in it. With more devices as such, USB modems are getting more convenient, one can just carry the modem and install it on any PC operating device without the hassle of carrying supporting software CDs and without the fear of losing that CD after its timely usage.

Anyways, back to the modem. Its VERY SIMPLE in its outlook, one SIM insertion slot, one 5 Pin Data Cable connector and a USB cable.

Here are images of the modem.

In addition to the hardware, the software for the modem is also extremely simple and easy to use. On the first installation, the step-by-step configuration menu will assist you in setting up the appropriate data service from any local operater that has already been pre-configured (no need to remember the APNs and *99# numbers).

Here are some snapshots :

The software enables you to still be in touch when needed (although no simultaneous Voice Call support) through SMS incoming notifications or sending of SMS. In addition, it has a hot button that links directly to your e-mail client like Outlook for immediate electronic correspondences one connected and once a connection is successfully establish, it will prompt for the internet browser of your preference to launch automatically. Pretty convenient huh?

I am also impressed by the fact that the modem does not heat up as others do. It has a lukewarm feel to it after a prolonged use, but nothing as what you'd be worried about like how hot the other modem gets.

To test the endurance of the modem, I let it run for 4 consecutive days without heavy downloading done... I did not even once get disconnected... impressive... and the modem still stays lukewarm :-)

But there is one flaw with the modem, you need to have the proper method of connecting the device to your PC or notebook to ensure that the software connects to it without being confused and continuously searching for the device (which I believe is more of a Windows issue rather than the modem software). The trick is to load the application first and when it searches for the device, connect the modem... or else, you'd have to do several start/quit program before it actually establishes the connection.

Anyways, its the best HSDPA modem I got so far, I recommend this. On top of it all, I am told that its price is ranging between RM 450 - 600, way cheaper than the others at the moment of writing.

Ok then, I am off.. more things to download... I am doing two movies in 1 1/2 hours with HSDPA....
