Mobile Number Portability Announced in Malaysia

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has finally been officially introduced in Malaysia, after years of discussion and planning.

Since the regulator, Suruhanjaya Kommunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (SKMM) ,issued the public enquiry paper in 2004, MNP was targeted to launch 2006. in Q4 2008, after the consortium that manages the MNP clearing house was identified and appointed; an industry task force was created and consists of SKMM and representatives from each telco to explore the best implementation approach and deployment.

MNP is a regulatory tool that is applied to the telecommunication industry to ensure higher competition between operators and to ensure that the consumers are gaining more benefits and better experience.

Earlier, there were several announcements to the launch of MNP by the previous Energy and Telecommunications minister. After three different announcements (March, April and June 2008), the new Minister that took office has the honor to announce the launch.

I will be covering more on MNP in my next coming posts on the background and benefits.. maybe with comparison with some other countries that had adopted MNP.
